Lucia Mugica (b.1997) is a photo-based artist residing in Ottawa, Canada. Her work is taken with medium and large format cameras. She uses photography to expose personal and human experiences through the creation of nude imagery. Her work conveys sensuality and intimacy, on one hand, and struggle and defiance, on the other. She believes in beautifying the female body all the while showing imperfection.
The troubled poses shine light on the separation of sexuality and nudity. There are no barriers between the body and the viewer, but the face is, at times masked, much as one keeps one self hidden from those they are closest to. The artist uses the camera to undress the female body and captures a fleeting sentiment.
Lucia is a graduate of the School of the Photographic Arts (SPAO), Ottawa and her work has been exhibited at the SPAO Centre, Exposure Gallery (2018), Figureworks 2018 and at the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival (2016, 2017) in Toronto.
